Reefscape live Sand and mud
The use of deep sand beds and live sand has proven to be one of the most effective ways of keeping a marine aquarium in optimum condition. We use deep sand beds in nearly all of our systems and they are one of the many natural practices that we endorse.
Our Live sand
Over several years we have collected many samples of live sand and live mud from many natural locations including coral reefs, tropical mangroves, temperate mangroves, live rock curing vats and countless aquariums to give us a brood stock of very diverse organisms to seed our live sand.
Reefscape live sand and live substrates are not just bacterially activated second hand substrates, they are alive. In our live sand you will find millions of critters, worms, copepods and bacteria responsible for nutrient reduction within the aquarium. In a matter of weeks our deep sand beds are fully functional and more often than not reduce nitrates to zero. Our live sand and substrates can be used to create a fully functional deep sand bed or simply be added over the top of existing deep sand beds to greatly increase biodiversity and organic export.
Transportation and storage
Great care is taken in the production, shipping and storage of our sand to ensure the life within it is healthy when it arrives with you. Our live sand is shipped, stored and treated with the same individual care required to ship any other live organism.
Reefscape live Mud.
Reefscape live mud is a blend of natural marine sediments, mud and calcium carbonate. There is no miracle behind its very effective filtration only natural science. It is high in iron to encourage the growth of macro algaes and natural marine minerals that are slowly released into the aquarium water over time.
90% of its composition is under 1/16mm and it is ideal to use at a depth 1-2 inches in a sump or topped off with Reefscape live sand to stop it being blown around.
Reefscape Live Mud has a huge biodiversity and is full of bacteria, flat worms and other burrowing critters responsible for maintaining aquarium health. We have used it with and without protein skimmers with great success, however we recommend the use of a skimmer especially when keeping hard corals.
Reefscape Live Sand
Reefscape live Sand is a blend of marine sediments, calcium carbonate, live sand and live mud. It is designed to be used on it's own at a depth of 4' or more or used to hold down Reefscape live mud at a depth of 1-2 inches.
Reefscape Live Sand grain size is between 0.5mm and 1mm and quickly facilitates anaerobic conditions at a shallow depth. It is packed with copepods, bristle stars and worms, and contains millions of bacteria responsible for both the aerobic and anaerobic breakdown of nitrogenous waist. Aquariums set up using these products are incredibly stable, corals flourish and the entire system is almost bullet proof in a short period.
Reefscape Deep Sand Bed Dry Mix
Reefscape Deep Sand Bed Dry Mix is a ready to go blend of marine sediments, pre-washed finely crushed calcium carbonate and calcium carbonate sand. It is washed to remove the finest clay and provides the ideal particle size for colonisation by bacteria and the organisms responsible for nitrate reduction. This product is not live.
